How fast is Wildwood actually growing?
Faster than almost anywhere in the country, and the numbers are not close. Wildwood counted 6,709 people in the 2010 census and 15,730 in 2020, and the Census Bureau estimates 19,436 as of July 1, 2025 - a further 23.0 percent in five years. Sumter County went from 93,420 to 129,752 across the same decade and is estimated at 157,772 for 2025, up 21.6 percent since the census. Leesburg, over the county line in Lake County, is the outlier of the group at 43.9 percent growth since 2020.
The metropolitan picture is the one that made national news. The Census Bureau reported that the Wildwood-The Villages metro area was the fastest-growing metro area in the United States between 2022 and 2023, growing nearly 5 percent to 151,565 people. That growth is almost entirely new residential construction on previously agricultural land, which is why the hardscape demand in this market skews so heavily toward new lanai floors, pool decks and driveway widening rather than toward restoring pavement laid decades ago.

How much rain does a paver base have to move?
The annual totals are unremarkable for Florida. The distribution is not. The 1991 to 2020 precipitation normals put Orlando at 51.45 inches a year and Gainesville at 48.31, but June through September alone account for 29.57 of Orlando's inches and 25.69 of Gainesville's - roughly 57 and 53 percent of the year's rain in four months. December through April at Orlando ranges from 1.79 to 3.03 inches a month.
Frequency tells the other half of the story. Orlando records 117 days a year with at least a hundredth of an inch of precipitation and Gainesville 115, but in the wet months the count climbs to 15 to 17 days at Orlando while the monthly totals more than double. That is the signature of concentrated convective rainfall rather than steady drizzle: the same number of wet days delivering far more water per event. Concentrated events are what move bedding sand out from under a paver field, and they are what an unrestrained edge cannot survive.

How many days a year does a pool deck bake?
Surface temperature is the single most common complaint about a Central Florida pool deck, and the underlying figure is published. Orlando averages 101 days a year with a maximum temperature at or above 90 degrees, over a record running from June 1952 through December 2023. Gainesville averages 87, Tampa 89 and Daytona Beach 60. The concentration is what matters: at Orlando, June through September alone carry 18, 24, 23 and 16 such days, meaning the deck is at or above 90 degrees on roughly two days in three for four straight months.
The normals put a floor under that. The 1991 to 2020 normal daily maximum temperature at Orlando is 92.0 degrees in July and 91.6 in August, with an annual normal daily maximum of 83.2. Those are air temperatures measured at instrument height in shade. A dark, dense paver in direct afternoon sun runs substantially hotter than the air above it, which is why colour and surface texture are a design decision on a pool deck rather than a styling one.

What does the installation standard actually require?
Interlocking concrete pavement has a published construction standard, and most of the arguments homeowners have with contractors are settled by it. The current version is Tech Note PAV-TEC-002-22, issued by the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association, which is what the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute became after its merger with the National Concrete Masonry Association. The figures below are quoted from it directly.
Two of them are worth calling out for this market. The bedding sand is specified as an uncompacted nominal one inch, screeded - not two inches, not a thick sand bed, and not an adjustable levelling layer for a base that was never graded properly. And the edge restraint has to present a minimum of one inch of vertical restraining surface against the side of the paver. On excessively drained Sumter County sand, the restraint also has to be spiked into compacted base rather than into loose material, which means the base itself has to extend past the paver edge.

What do these numbers not tell you?
Four limits, stated plainly. First, none of the climate figures were measured in Wildwood. The nearest long-record comparative climatic data stations are Orlando and Gainesville, roughly 45 miles away in opposite directions, and the spread between them on 90-degree days is 14 days a year. Treat them as bracketing the local climate rather than describing it. Second, the day-count tables and the normals cover different periods - the normals are 1991 to 2020 while the day counts run from 1952 or 1960 through 2023 - so the two are legitimate for characterising a climate but not for claiming a trend.
Third, air temperature is a poor proxy for surface temperature. A 92-degree normal daily maximum in July is measured in shade at instrument height; a dark paver in direct sun runs well above it and a light textured one runs closer to it, and neither difference appears anywhere in the record. Fourth, the base and bedding figures are minimums published for typical conditions, not a design for a specific site. A driveway carrying heavier loads, a soft area of subgrade, or a long rural approach can all justify going deeper, and no published table can tell you that from a distance.
One further gap worth naming: there is no published dataset of paver installation failures for Sumter County, or for Florida generally, so nothing on this page quantifies how often bedding washout, edge failure or root heave occur. Those mechanisms are described in the installation standard and in the soil and tree literature cited below, but the frequency is not something anyone has measured. Any contractor quoting a failure rate for this market is quoting a number that does not exist.

Is a 6-inch base actually enough for a driveway on Sumter County sand?
Six inches after compaction is the published minimum for a residential driveway, and a minimum is a floor rather than a specification for a particular site. Sumter County soils are excessively drained sands with almost no cohesion and very little bearing capacity of their own, so the base carries nearly all the structural work. Heavier vehicles, a long approach, or soft subgrade all justify going deeper. What is not defensible is going shallower than six inches under anything a car drives on.
