Paver Installation in Wildwood, Done Right

Wildwood is not the Florida of postcards. It is the Crossroads of Florida, the point where Interstate 75, Florida's Turnpike, US 301 and State Road 44 all meet, and for a century that meant a rail yard and cattle. Then The Villages came south across County Road 470, Wildwood rezoned 12,513 acres in early 2020 for the Southern Oaks expansion, and the city went from 6,709 people in the 2010 census to 15,730 in 2020 to a Census Bureau estimate of 19,436 by July 2025. Most of those new driveways, lanais and pool decks are paver, and most of them sit on sand that runs uninterrupted for eighty inches.

Crossroads Paver Company works Wildwood, the Southern Oaks villages, Oxford and the rest of Sumter County, plus Lady Lake and Leesburg over the county line. The work is driveways, pool decks and lanai floors, patios, walkways, sealing and repair - and the part that decides whether any of it lasts happens before a single paver is set. Excavate to depth, compact the subgrade, build the base in lifts, screed one inch of bedding sand, restrain the edges properly. You get a measured quote with the base spec written on it, not a per-job guess. Pavers are the easy part.

Our Wildwood Services

Paver Driveways

Concrete paver driveways and cart-width driveway widening across Wildwood and the Southern Oaks villages. Excavated, compacted base built for deep sand, one inch of screeded bedding, and an edge restraint that actually holds the field together. Overlay over sound concrete or full removal and rebuild, priced separately so you can see the difference.

Typical: $12 - $22 per sq ft installed; most two-car driveways run $9,000 to $18,000

Pool Decks & Lanai Pavers

Paver pool decks, screened lanai floors and birdcage slabs for Wildwood and the Villages of Southern Oaks. Cool-surface material selection, positive drainage away from the house, and coping that sits level under bare feet. Built to work inside an existing screen enclosure without pulling the cage.

Typical: $13 - $24 per sq ft for concrete pavers, $16 - $28 per sq ft for travertine

Paver Patios

Rear patios, fire pit surrounds and extended slabs behind Wildwood and Southern Oaks homes. Sized to the lot and the easements rather than to a brochure, sloped away from the foundation, and built on a compacted base so furniture legs do not sink into sand two seasons later.

Typical: $12 - $22 per sq ft; a 300 sq ft patio typically runs $3,900 to $6,900

Walkways & Entryways

Front walks, entry landings, side paths and cart-path connectors in Wildwood and Sumter County. Width set to the door and the district rules, level joints without a lip, and edge restraint on both sides because a narrow ribbon of pavers in sand is the easiest thing in hardscaping to build wrong.

Typical: $14 - $26 per sq ft; a 4 ft wide, 30 ft front walk usually runs $1,700 to $3,100

Paver Sealing

Cleaning, joint re-sanding and sealing for Wildwood driveways, pool decks and lanais. Efflorescence removed first, joints refilled and locked, then a sealer chosen for Central Florida UV and afternoon downpours rather than for how wet it looks in a photograph.

Typical: $1.25 - $3.50 per sq ft including cleaning, joint re-sanding and sealer

Paver Repair & Re-Levelling

Lifting, rebuilding and resetting sunken, spreading or root-heaved paver areas across Wildwood and Sumter County. Bedding sand washout, failed edge restraint and live oak surface roots are the three causes in this market, and each one needs a different repair rather than more sand in the joints.

Typical: $8 - $18 per sq ft of area lifted and reset; most single-area repairs run $650 to $2,200

Why Wildwood Homeowners Choose Us

Built for Sumter County sand

Sumter County soil is sand from the surface down past eighty inches, excessively drained, with almost nothing holding it together. Every base depth, compaction pass and edge detail we specify is chosen for that ground rather than copied from a northern spec sheet.

Base spec written on the quote

Excavation depth, base thickness, bedding depth and edge restraint type appear on the quote in writing. That is the part of the job nobody sees once the pavers go down, which is exactly why it should be on paper before the work starts.

District rules checked first

Southern Oaks, Lady Lake and Lake County districts each cap what you may widen, extend or coat, and approvals expire. We confirm the rule that applies to your villa type before pricing so an approved plan and the built job are the same thing.

Season-aware scheduling

Wet season storms and snowbird calendars both drive this market. We schedule so a driveway is not open through a week of afternoon downpours and so pool decks are not torn up the week the family arrives.

How It Works

Measure and confirm the rules

We measure the actual area, check the survey for easements, and confirm what your district or municipality allows for widening, coverage and approvals. Free, and priced by the square foot rather than by guess.

Excavate and compact

Dig to depth, compact the sand subgrade, install geotextile where the soil calls for it, then build base in lifts with a pass of the plate between each one. This is the part that decides the outcome.

Screed, set and restrain

One inch of screeded bedding sand, pavers set and cut to the pattern, then a rigid edge restraint spiked into compacted base so the field has something to push against.

Compact, sand and walk it

Plate compact the field with a protective mat, sweep and vibrate joint sand until the joints stop taking it, then walk the finished work with you and check the plane with a straightedge.

Local Knowledge That Matters in Wildwood

Wildwood grew from 6,709 people in the 2010 census to 15,730 in 2020, and the Census Bureau put it at 19,436 by July 2025. Almost all of that is The Villages coming south. In February 2020 Wildwood commissioners rezoned 12,513 acres for the Villages of Southern Oaks, and Village Community Development District 13 alone was established by City of Wildwood Ordinance No. O2018-26 covering about 2,231.8 acres and 8,062 homesites in villages named Bradford, Cason Hammock, Citrus Grove, Chitty Chatty, DeLuna, Hammock at Fenney, Hawkins, Richmond, St. Catherine and St. Johns. Those are new homes on graded sand with young landscaping, which means the hardscape questions in Wildwood are overwhelmingly about lanai floors, pool decks, cart-width driveways and patios rather than about restoring something built in 1975.

The ground is the thing that makes paver work here different. USDA soil mapping for Sumter County is dominated by Astatula, Candler and Lake fine sands, all classed excessively drained, with Tavares and Apopka on the moderately-well and well-drained end. The Candler series is described as sand exceeding eighty inches in thickness with very rapid to rapid permeability. There is no frost line to design around and no clay to bridge across, so nothing about a paver installation in Sumter County is governed by freeze-thaw. What governs it is water moving through loose material. Rain that arrives in wet-season bursts finds any unrestrained edge or unfilled joint, carries the bedding course out sideways, and drops the field a half inch at a time. That is why edge restraint and compaction get so much attention on a Wildwood quote and so little on a brochure.

We cover Wildwood and the Southern Oaks villages first, then out across Sumter County - Oxford, Bushnell, Sumterville, Coleman, Lake Panasoffkee, Webster and Center Hill - and over the county line into Lady Lake, Fruitland Park, Leesburg and Okahumpka in Lake County. The rules change as you cross those lines, which matters more than the mileage does. Lady Lake requires a permit for any new or replaced concrete or pavers inside town limits. Leesburg lists paver installation among residential work that does not require a permit. Bushnell has had its building permits and inspections handled by Sumter County Building Services since April 1, 2025. Same sand, same rain, three different sets of paperwork, and we sort out which one applies to your address before quoting.

What Does Paver Installation Cost in Wildwood?

Most Wildwood paver work prices out between $12 and $22 per square foot installed, with pool decks and natural stone running higher and overlays over sound concrete running lower. A typical two-car driveway of 700 to 900 square feet lands between $9,000 and $18,000 depending on material, base depth and whether existing concrete has to come out. The variables that move a quote most are demolition, base depth and the amount of cutting a curved or bordered layout requires. Here is roughly how the numbers break out around Sumter County.

Service Typical Wildwood Range
Paver driveway, two-car (approx. 700-900 sq ft) $9,000 - $18,000
Driveway widening for a golf cart (2-6 ft strip) $1,800 - $5,200
Paver overlay on sound existing concrete $9 - $16 per sq ft
Pool deck or lanai floor, concrete pavers $13 - $24 per sq ft

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a paver driveway cost in Wildwood, FL?

Most Wildwood paver driveways run $12 to $22 per square foot installed, which puts a typical two-car driveway of 700 to 900 square feet between $9,000 and $18,000. Removing an existing concrete driveway adds roughly $2 to $6 per square foot on top. An overlay over sound concrete comes in lower, around $9 to $16 per square foot, because the demolition and base build are already done. Every quote is measured rather than estimated from the street.

Do pavers hold up in Central Florida sand?

They hold up extremely well when the base is right and fail quickly when it is not. Sumter County soils are Astatula, Candler and Lake fine sands, excessively drained and offering almost no cohesion, so the base and the edge restraint are doing all the structural work. There is no freeze-thaw here to fight, which helps. What replaces it is water moving sand, and that is controlled with compacted base built in lifts and a restraint the field can push against.

Do I need approval from my Villages district before installing pavers?

In the Villages districts, yes for most exterior modifications. The Southern Oaks architectural review manual covering Districts 13, 14 and 15 sets limits on driveway widening by villa type, caps walkway extensions at six feet, and requires extensions to attach to the original developer-built work. Approved applications are valid for nine months with one extension available. In the Lady Lake and Lake County districts, the ARC does not review driveway painting, coating or pavers for standard homes, but town permits still apply.

Is a city or county permit required for pavers in Wildwood?

It depends on the address and the scope, which is why we check first. Wildwood publishes both a residential driveway permit application and an impervious surface application, and the city defines impervious surface broadly enough to include anything paved, gravelled or covered with stone. Lady Lake requires a permit for any new or replaced concrete or pavers in town limits. Leesburg lists paver installation among residential work that does not need one. Bushnell permits have run through Sumter County Building Services since April 1, 2025.

How long does a paver driveway take to install?

A straightforward two-car driveway with no demolition is usually two to three working days: excavation and base on day one, setting and cutting on day two, compaction, joint sand and clean-up on day three. Removing an existing concrete slab adds a day and a dumpster. Larger pool decks, curved layouts and heavy cutting run longer. Wet-season afternoon storms are the main scheduling variable, so the plan is built to avoid leaving an open excavation through a rainy stretch.

Can pavers be installed over an existing concrete slab?

Often, and it is a real saving when the slab qualifies. The requirements are that the concrete is sound rather than broken into moving sections, that it drains away from the house, and that adding about an inch and a half of height still clears the garage threshold and ties into the street apron without a lip. Slabs that have stepped at a crack, settled at one end, or pond water do not qualify, because an overlay raises the problem rather than solving it.

How wide can I widen a driveway for a golf cart?

That is set by your district and villa type, not by the contractor. In the Southern Oaks architectural review manual, patio villas may widen no more than two feet on each side, a golf cart garage driveway is capped at six feet wide, and courtyard villas are not permitted driveway extensions except on end lots for parking. Other districts publish their own numbers, including an eight-foot maximum golf cart garage door width on the Lady Lake side. We confirm the applicable rule in writing before quoting.

Why do pavers sink in one spot and not elsewhere?

Because water is doing something different at that spot. The usual causes in Sumter County are a downspout discharging on the field, a low point that collects sheet flow during wet-season storms, or an open edge letting bedding sand escape sideways. Sand carried out from under the pavers drops the field, and refilling the joints does nothing about it. The durable repair lifts the area, redirects or accommodates the water, rebuilds base and bedding, and resets the same units.

How often should pavers be sealed in Sumter County?

Every two to four years for most fields, driven by sun exposure more than by the calendar. The nearest long-record NOAA station averages 101 days a year at or above 90 degrees, and that ultraviolet load is what fades pigment. The test is to drop water on the surface: beading means the film is still working, and absorption that darkens the paver means it has worn through. New pavers need to finish releasing efflorescence before any sealer goes on, which usually means waiting months rather than weeks.

What is the best time of year for paver work in Wildwood?

Anything outside the heaviest wet-season stretch is easier, though work happens year round. June through September is when the rain concentrates - the nearest long-record station shows those four months carrying almost 30 inches of the annual 51-inch normal - and an open base excavation in that window has to be planned around the forecast. Winter and early spring are the smoothest months for scheduling and also when a large share of seasonal residents are in town to make decisions.
